In southern Afghanistan, Karzais is the problem, not the Taliban

During his recent visit to Kandahar on April 4th, tribal elders told president Karzai that his government was as much a problem as the Taliban. According to the elders, the government officials from top to the lower rank police were totally corrupt and involved in drug trafficking and hateful crimes.

This they said publicly. Some local sources say that the elders privately told President Karzai that his own warlord and drug mafia brother, Ahmad Wali Karzai, was the main cause of all problems. This brother of President Karzai has been a drug king in the whole southern zone, has permanent contacts with the insurgents and criminals and use them as his own private murderers against whoever tries to meddle in his affairs. He runs Kandahar and provinces under its influence as his own very corrupt, brutal and unpopular medieval kingdom.

Unfortunately, President Karzai presents his beloved brother as an ‘innocent target’ of Western media and defends his activities because he had played a crucial role in getting him elected in the August 2009 fraudulent election.

The situation in Kandahar and the adjacent southern provinces is so bad and hopeless that many people think it is not a part of the same country which has Nangrahar in the east and Mazar-e-Sharif in the north. Local people say that every official from top (governor) to the lowest rank (policemen) is given free hand loot people, commit crimes, rape women and boys, kidnap foreigners, sell and smuggle drugs, and whatever they like as long as they serve their king, Ahmad Wali Karzai, and men from his tribe.

People whom we talked to in the province of Kandahar demanded that before launching any operation against the Taliban in the province, the international community needs to consider an equally aggressive operation against the Karzais, otherwise the situation will never get better.

Karzai, a good replacement for Baradar!

In October 2004, when I first voted Karzai to become the president of our country, I did not know he will show his willingness to become a Taliban in 2010. At that time, our hope was getting rid of terrorism, extremism, and warlordism by 2010. We hoped we will have a stable and secure country with a free democratic system in place by this year.

Unfortunately, our hopes and dreams were shattered when we saw our elected rulers and their relatives becoming warlords and drug traffickers and the country going deep and deep in corruption along with the wave of terrorism growing more and more. This discouraged us from voting in August 2010.

Though the election was a complete fraud, we still hoped the situation will get better during the months ahead as there was an international pressure on the President to clean his deeply corrupted administration and remove his warlord relatives from government positions. That was also his promise during his election campaign. But our hopes just proved to be false dreams as we saw Iran’s Ahmadinejad using our presidential palace against the very people who helped us getting rid of terrorism and established the government in Kabul, who spent billions of dollars in reconstruction and lost thousands of soldiers in securing this country.

Now worse, the President threatened to join the Taliban if there is more interference by the foreigners. As reported by the New York Times, he said: ‘If you and the international community pressures me more, I swear that I am going to join the Taliban.’

Very good Mr. President! You should go on honeymoon with the most despicable criminal warlords, you should love the groups who have left no stone unturned in destroying this country and killing its people, you should issue dictatorial decrees that push you closer to your dictator neighbor in Iran, and you should appoint the most corrupt of the people as the topmost rulers. Nobody has the right to ask you. Neither the people who have voted for you nor the ones that brought you to this country, helped you in achieving the top position, spent billions of dollars in protecting you, and lost thousands of boys and girls in securing you.

Well, it is a golden chance for you to change the track and now join the Taliban. You can prove a good replacement for Mullah Baradar. Good luck Mr. President!
